About Us

Choice Reading Books is a publishing company founded to work with known and aspiring authors. We have chosen to be a Small Press publishing company so we can examine and publish works of art in a shorter time frame than many other publishing houses. Publishing today comes in many varieties:
  • Traditional large publishing houses:
    • These companies are well founded in many years of publishing. They frequently print thousands of copies of books and if everything goes well they and the author make money. Frequently it can take as long as 9 to 12 months or more to have a manuscript examined. Most aspiring authors dream of publishing with a “Traditional” firm and we wish those authors well.
    • Usually all printed work is returnable
    • Royalties vary by publishing firm, but many major houses are radically scaling back the size of royalties

  • POD (Print on Demand) publishing houses:
    • These companies have appeared with the advent of the current printing technology. Today it is possible to print a single book or in volumes of a 1,000 or more. Typically with these companies, the author pays all printing costs and is responsible for all of the marketing and sales as well. Marketing and advertising can also be purchased through these companies, but these costs can run an author as much as $5,000 to $20,000 from beginning to end. As most of the initial price is a “loss leader”, authors are constantly barraged with the latest add-on, for a fee.
    • Usually books are not returnable unless you pay a fee of around $700 (a year)
    • Royalties - none. Any income is derived from the difference in the price paid for a book by an author to the price the author can sell the book for.

These two types of publishing concerns represent the extremes of the publishing world. Either is right and can work for an author or either is wrong. It is important that you are comfortable with the choice you make.

  • Small Press “lighter” publishing houses:
    • These companies have appeared with the advent of the current printing technology. Today it is possible to print a single book or in volumes of 1,000 or more. Typically with these companies, print runs of 500 to 2,500 copies will be made. Marketing and advertising are performed at a minimal level; for the most part the author should take an active role.
    • Usually all printed work is returnable, specific timeframes vary between different companies
    • Royalties often are between the $1.00 and 1.50 per book sold

  • Choice Reading Books “lighter” publishing house:
    • Our company makes a connection between Small Press and POD. Typically we suggest initial print runs of 1,000 copies. All of our books are delivered to various companies for public distribution to booksellers. Marketing and advertising are performed at a basic level.
    • Printed work is returnable for a period of a year and can be extended through mutual agreement. Typically if a book is going to sell it is during the first year.
    • Our difference is that we share the investment cost of your book. We will give you a price that includes editing, artwork, basic advertising and printing of 1,000 books. We will then “insure” the book as returnable and provide - at no additional cost - and perform basic marketing and advertising. We can’t stress that even in a larger house, marketing is critical by each and every author. It is your work of art and who can better convey its significance and reason to buy.
    • Royalties often are between the $1.25 and 2.25 per book sold; depending on the actual retail price of your book
    • We give you tips on how to structure your book, how to advertise and much more
    • Because we will have your book stocked at central storage facilities, requests will be filled immediately rather than showing a back logged status.

Clearly, the manner in which you publish your work is a personal choice. We will read and notify you in a very timely manner if we feel the manuscript fits within our plans. We do not publish everything that comes to our desk; only those we feel are worth investing our time, effort and financial resources behind.

If we are interested in your work we will email a contract to you for your signature. Once the contract is signed and appropriate material and finances are handled, we can begin the process of getting your work published.

The avenues available to publish a manuscript are varied. What is appropriate for one may not be for another. Choice Reading Books is neither a traditional nor a POD publishing company. We count ourselves as a hybrid Small Press company with the right vision to help you get your work published in today’s world.
